This week I read chapter two of Life together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. After last week I was really excited to get back into the book and see what he has to say next. I found that I got a lot out of him in the first chapter of the book and was very curious to see what I would get out of this chapter this week. The chapter was titled “The Day with Others”. This chapter starts off with something that is pretty interesting that not many people, including me, have be taught about. He opens up with how the day begins in both the old testament and the new testament. In the old testament the day begins with evening and ends with the sun going down, which is very interesting to me and have never thought about that. In the New Testament we see something a little bit different in regards to the time of day. The day begins with break of day and ends with the dawning of light the next morning. While this is still a little different to us it is closer to what must of us would think about. After that he goes on to talk about what we think about today while we have no fear of darkness. We don’t need to be afraid of it because we have the grace of Jesus and no where we are going when we die. The first Christians did not have this, this is why they rejoiced when they saw the morning light. That very idea blows my mind. We get to live so differently and have so much more opportunity, but is that a blessing or a cure. When they lived they lived like every day was their last, and honestly we should too but why don’t we. Why would be live different if we know we are safe. We should be as worried about others as ourselves and should work each day to spread the word as it is the last day and these people will never get to hear the word of GOd.
